Local first means making a pivot to local marketing strategies. Follow us along this series to become a local name.

Hey there, neighbor! đź‘‹ Do you remember your first local customer?

(We do!)

In today's digital world, it's easy to get caught up in the internet's global reach (rightfully so!).

But for businesses like yours, the heart of your success lies in your local community.

That’s right. This month we’re covering what it means to market locally...first!

Why Does Local Marketing Matter?

Local marketing is all about building relationships with customers in your immediate area. Your sphere, your database, whatever you’re referring to it as.

It's about creating a sense of community and becoming a familiar, trusted face.

For realtors, this means showcasing your expertise in the local housing market.

For retail/e-commerce brands, it's about creating a unique in-store experience and building a loyal customer base.

And for mental health companies, it's about establishing a safe and supportive space within the community.

Local marketing is like banana pudding. There’s a lot of simple components coming together to create a spectacular

Key Strategies for Local Marketing

Local marketing is one of my (LJ’s) favorites. It’s all the types of marketing, wrapped up in one, with a pretty bow AND you get to know your clients more intimately.

So…

…This topic’ll take us TWO months to cover fully.

(So buckle up!)

  • Local SEO: You’ll learn how to optimize your website and online content for local searches, including using relevant keywords, creating location-specific pages, and listing your business on local directories.

  • Community Engagement: You’ll have a plan to get involved in local events, sponsor local sports teams, or partner with other businesses for joint promotions to increase your locality.

  • Content Marketing: You will learn how to develop content that is relevant to your local audience, such as blog posts about local events, social media posts featuring local landmarks, or videos showcasing local businesses.

  • Social Media: We already cover social media a lot, but this time round, you’ll learn how to use social media to connect with local customers and build relationships first before focusing on virality.

  • Email Marketing: You’ll build an email list of local customers and send them targeted promotions, updates, and newsletters.

  • Traditional Marketing: Don't forget about traditional marketing methods like print advertising, direct mail, and flyers. These can still be effective ways to reach your local audience.

Measuring Your Success

After covering the hows and whys of all these methods we’ll pan out and see what’s working (and not).

This will help you adjust your strategy accordingly.

Some key metrics to track include website traffic, social media engagement, foot traffic, and sales.

(Yes, we’ll cover how to deep-dive those metrics for local marketing instead of virality.)
